Pre-Formal Pathway

Within the pre‑formal learning pathway, our aim is to create an environment where pupils with complex needs can feel safe, supported, and able to develop as much independence as possible. All children in this pathway have a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Condition and severe learning difficulties. Many may also experience significant communication challenges, difficulties with attention and focus, sensory differences, and challenges in managing emotions. Children will have a very individual learning profile, meaning they may show strengths in some areas while working at earlier developmental stages in others. This often means they are learning at a level before the expectations of the National Curriculum. Because of this, pupils access provision rather than a formal curriculum. We focus on each child’s developmental stage and ensure they have the foundation knowledge and skills they need before moving on to more structured learning. Our approach recognises that children must build the right early knowledge and skills, such as communication, interaction, regulation, and engagement, before they are ready for more formal learning experiences.
